چکیده

Veira, D. M., Lysyk, T. J., Thompson, D. J., Garland, G. J. and Majak, W. 2010. Effect of grazing mixtures of alfalfa and orchardgrass grown in strips on the incidence of bloat in cattle. Can. J. Anim. Sci. 90: 109 112. Steers were grazed on pastures with alfalfa and orchardgrass grown in monoculture strips with alfalfa covering 100, 75 or 50% of the ground area. The forages were maintained at an early stage of growth during the trial. The incidence of frothy bloat in cattle was reduced by 70 to 90% when grass was a component of the pasture. Given unconstrained free choice, the legume was preferred over the grass by steers.

An alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) cultivar with a low initial rate of digestion (LIRD), AC Grazeland B , was developed to test the hypothesis that the rate of cell rupture was a cause of frothy bloat in cattle or sheep. The amount of cell wall increases and digestibility declines as plants mature. Thus the cell rupture theory also predicts that the bloat potential of alfalfa is related to maturit...

Forage systems for beef production from conception to slaughter: I. Cow-calf production.

Six year-round, all-forage, three-paddock systems for beef cow-calf production were used to produce five calf crops during a 6-yr period. Forages grazed by cows during spring, summer, and early fall consisted of one paddock of 1) tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.)-ladino clover (Trifolium repens L.) or 2) Kentucky blue-grass (Poa pratensis L.)-white clover (Trifolium repens L.). Each of ...

Combination effect of grazing intensity and livestock type (sheep, cattle and integrated grazing) on physical and chemical properties of soil (Case study: woody rangelands of Savadkouh city, Mazandaran)

Intense grazing of rangeland is one of the most important factors affecting rangeland degradation, which causes soil compaction, increased runoff, weakening and degradation of vegetation, and changes in rangeland species composition, and ultimately affects forage and livestock production. The present study was conducted to investigate the different intensities of cattle and sheep grazing and in...

Utilization of energy and nitrogen by yearling Holstein cattle fed direct-cut alfalfa or orchardgrass ensiled with formic acid plus formaldehyde.

First-growth orchardgrass and alfalfa were harvested at two stages of maturity, treated with formic acid plus formaldehyde, and ensiled as direct-cut silage during 1978 and 1979. The 1978 silages were fed to eight yearling Holstein heifers (average BW 273 kg), and the 1979 silages were fed to eight yearling Holstein steers (average BW 264 kg) in replicated 4 x 4 Latin square experiments to meas...

Comparison of bloat potential between a variety of soft-red versus a variety of hard-red winter wheat forage.

Some aspects of wheat pasture bloat have been researched extensively, but few studies have evaluated the effect of wheat type or variety on bloat. Eight Gelbvieh x Angus ruminally cannulated heifers (515 +/- 49 kg of BW) and 48 Angus heifers (238 +/- 12 kg of BW) grazed 1-ha pastures of hard-red or soft-red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to evaluate the effect of wheat variety on bloat pot...
